About Tree of One

Rooted in Connection. Driven by Purpose.

My name is Laura Herrick, and for more than two decades I’ve had the honor of helping nonprofits grow their impact through relationship-based fundraising, strategic leadership, and compassionate, steady guidance during moments of change.

I founded Tree of One because I believe in the power of small and mid-sized organizations — the ones closest to community, closest to need, and closest to possibility. These organizations deserve thoughtful support, meaningful strategy, and a partner who sees their potential clearly.

My journey has taken me through leadership roles in philanthropy, humanitarian service, arts and culture, social justice, public media, and national fundraising. Whether raising millions for mission-driven causes, building major donor pipelines, leading high-impact teams, or guiding foundations through growth and transformation, my work has always centered on relationships and trust.

At the heart of my approach is a simple understanding:

People give to people.
And they stay when they feel connected.

Values That Shape the Work

Compassion – Every organization deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.

Curiosity – I listen deeply to understand what matters most to you and your community.

Collaboration – We build solutions together, grounded in your strengths.

Clarity – Strategy should feel empowering, not overwhelming.

Community – Philanthropy is at its best when it uplifts everyone involved.

A Snapshot of My Background

Over the course of my career, I have:

  • Served as CEO of a national foundation, overseeing a $40M+ budget and hundreds of grants to grassroots organizations
  • Raised and influenced more than $250M in philanthropic support across multiple organizations
  • Led major gift, annual fund, and planned giving strategies in complex, multi-stakeholder environments
  • Designed strategic plans, philanthropic programs, and operational systems that support long-term sustainability
  • Led and mentored diverse teams, helping staff grow into leadership roles
  • Spoken at national and international gatherings on philanthropy, community, and justice

Each role has reinforced my belief that generosity is an expression of shared humanity — and that nonprofits deserve partners who understand both their vision and their reality.

A Personal Note:

The name Tree of One reflects my belief that every act of service — every seed of effort — has the potential to grow into something larger that connects us. One story, one donor, one vision, one moment of generosity can transform an entire community.

My hope is that our work together will help your organization grow deeper roots, stronger branches, and a canopy of impact that shelters and uplifts the people you serve.
